About FORT CDT
The Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Open Secure Networks (CDT-FORT) is a pioneering initiative funded by the EPSRC, jointly delivered by the University of Surrey and Queen’s University Belfast.
In an increasingly connected world, the need for open, secure, and resilient communication systems has never been greater. FORT CDT trains the next generation of experts who will drive innovation across wireless communications, cybersecurity, networking, and AI, all fields facing a critical skills shortage.
Programme Highlights:
4-year PhD programme, with Year 1 focused on enhancing technical capability through MSc modules
Enhanced tax-free stipend: £31,000 (TechExpert pilot – home-fee students, 2026 intake)
Research Training Support Grant: approx. £3,700 per year (Years 2–4)
Access to world-leading academics and facilities at both partner universities
